The Broadband Systems Group of the University of Aveiro (GSBL) was created in 1989, in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications.

Over the years GSBL diversified into a series of interrelated research teams, acting in the areas of broadband technologies and networks (optical communications, network engineering, economic and social aspects of telecommunications, etc). Some of these teams were later integrated in IT (Instituto de Telecomunicações) and matured into autonomous research groups.
The tradition of GSBL continues to be carried out, supporting students of different levels eager to learn about telecommunications and its implications (engineering, socio-economics, etc).
